War-affected adolescent girls living in refugee camps often do not have access to basic hygiene items—especially menstrual products. Not having these necessities actually can prevent a girl from attending school, which puts her at risk for ending up on the streets and falling prey to human traffickers. Each of our students receives a farm plot and seeds for growing her crops -- things like maize, rice, soybeans, eggplant, and spinach. The girls are able to use their crops for food and to sell at market.

We want to provide the children of refugees with learning materials and school supplies as well as teachers to bring them along in their socialization skills. It’s important for these young ones to get a healthy start on their education!

Operating a successful bakery in their community after graduation can be a great source of income. We teach them the basics of making bread and other goodies -- so they can go out and make some “bread” for themselves.

Each family we work with in the refugee settlement camps will be provided a plot of land on which to raise crops for their own use and to sell. We will lease the land for them and provide the tools, seeds, and fertilizer they need to get a good start on their gardens.

This inexpensive but vital netting might be the only thing between our students and their children and a case of mosquito-borne malaria.

Hair styling takes a skilled hand and the proper tools. We supply each student with a comb (you should see what they can do with one comb!), a hand mirror, pomade, and hair weave in various colors. Many of our graduates now earn a good living doing hair styling in their communities.

Huts are outfitted with a bunk-bed and mattress, linens, a blanket, a broom, two jerry cans for hauling water, and a wash basin for bathing and washing clothes.

These knee-high black rubber boots keep students and staff safe and dry as they work on the farmland.

Farming requires tools, and we supply our students with implements like rakes, hoes, and shovels for planting their crops.

These residences are modeled after a typical Ugandan village home, with cement block walls, an elevated cement floor, two windows, a door, and a dried-grass roof that needs replacing every five years or so. They keep our students cool in the African heat and warm on chilly nights.
